Proposition 19 has drawn a lot of interests across the country. The bill would allow persons, age 21 and above to posses up to 1 ounce of marijuana for personal consumption. Prop 19 would authorize the retail sale of up to 1 ounce per transaction and allows transportation between licensed premises. But, what will be the outcome if Proposition 19 passes?
The bill could have sweeping implications for medical marijuana clinics through California and across other states with medical marijuana laws. Las Vegas clinics that distribute medical marijuana could see an influx of product at significantly lower prices. Some estimates say that the prices of marijuana could fall as much as 80%. What this would do for Las Vegas doctors who recommend medical marijuana is drastically reduce their cost and in turn reduce the cost to patients. Medical centers in Las Vegas that recommend medical marijuana could see a dramatic increase in the number of new patients.
Tax Implications
With Californians experiencing a record budget deficit the State Board of Equalization has estimated that a $50 per ounce levy on marijuana sales could create $1.4 billion a year in tax revenue. In 1996 California legalized the sale of marijuana for medical reasons, soon after Nevada followed suit. If the trends hold then there could be similar ramifications for this bill. If cannabis was legalized in Nevada then Las Vegas clinics could shift to operating outright marijuana dealerships. Medical Las Vegas marijuana could see a shift in the way that their businesses are operated and Nevada could see the same type of tax implications as California.
Crime Reduction
In a city where many things are all ready legalized it would seem that adding one more thing to that list couldn’t hurt. One of the largest problems with the marijuana trade is that it is operated on the black market. If marijuana was legalized then you would see a reduction in the amount of gang related violence. Las Vegas doctors who recommend medical marijuana would benefit through the opening of a new line of business. Medical center in Las Vegas would see incidents of violent crime reduced due to the market being regulated. Many police chiefs and law enforcement agents have come out in favor of Prop 19 passing.
Implications for the Medical Community
If Proposition 19 passed if could potentially allow the medical community to effectively evaluate marijuana’s medicinal effects. There is considerable evidence that shows marijuana has solid medical uses, however, prohibition has made studies very difficult. Las Vegas clinics could so studies to see what the further benefits for medical marijuana are. Las Vegas doctors could determine what the best course of treatment for patients is, be it traditional or a medical marijuana treatment.
The vote is less than a month away. This bill could have far reaching implications for everyone in this country. If people want change then they should focus their attention on this issue. It’s time Las Vegas doctors and clinics had the ability to treat patients how they see fit, it’s time to end a failing drug war and it’s time to put money back into our economy.
